Community Education and Resources

Autism Awareness StickersAutism Stickers

Whatcom County Emergency Medical Services has launched a new community outreach program called the Autism Awareness Program for Public Safety Responders. Free stickers have been created for the public. With greater awareness, these stickers can help alert EMS, Fire, and Police responders that they may encounter a patient with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) when responding to an emergency. We want parents of children with Autism to pick up the stickers and place them somewhere first responders will notice, such as cars or on the door of a person's room. Contact Steven Cohen ([email protected]) for more information.

Rider Alert Program

The Ride Alert Cards are placed inside a rider’s motorcycle, bicycle, ATV, or ski helmet and contain vital, life-saving information, emergency contact, and important medical history. When EMS, Fire, Police, or Ski Patrol arrive on the scene of an accident, a one-inch round sticker on the outside of the helmet will indicate that the rider has the Rider Alert Card. The sticker also warns bystanders not to remove the helmet, which could prevent further injury. Contact Steven Cohen ([email protected]) for more information.

Narcan Leave Behind

Whatcom County Emergency Medical Services is proud to continue the Narcan Leave Behind Program. This program provides Narcan Kits to those At-Risk individuals, an involved bystander who want to help, or families who are at risk of opioid-related overdose. Narcan is a medication that can save lives by reversing the effects of an opioid overdose. Contact Steven Cohen ([email protected]) for more information.

Narcan and Hands-Only CPR Free Training Course

The two-hour training involves both lecture and practice sessions. Hands-only CPR involves pushing hard and fast on the center of the victim's chest. In our Narcan training, you will learn how to recognize an opioid overdose, administer naloxone, and care for the individual until emergency services arrive. Individuals who complete the training program will receive a Narcan Kit. Our next course is October 22, 2024, from 7 to 9 p.m. Register: https://bit.ly/4ds8o4E

Stop The Bleed Courses

We offer Free Stop the Bleed courses once a quarter. Our next course date has not been set. The STOP THE BLEED® campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff and the White House. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life-threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters. Contact Steven Cohen ([email protected]) for more information.

First responder Paramedic Willy Spaulding also was interviewed, and reiterated the importance of citizen CPR and described the rapid response of Whatcom County BLS and ALS crews.
