Responsibilities

The Whatcom County Long Range Planning Division is dedicated to fostering sustainable growth and development by preparing for the county's future needs. This proactive approach involves analyzing current trends, engaging with community stakeholders, and developing comprehensive plans that reflect the vision and goals of local residents. The Long Range Planning team focuses on land use, environmental stewardship, transportation, and public services, ensuring that growth is balanced with the preservation of Whatcom County's unique resources and character. By implementing thoughtful policies and fostering community involvement, Whatcom County aims to create a vibrant and healthy environment for all its residents.

Whatcom County’s Comprehensive Plan is intended to guide growth in unincorporated areas in coordination with the plans of its cities. The fundamental purpose of the Comprehensive Plan is to establish a framework of goals and policies for the more detailed growth planning and implementation actions which will occur in the near future in designated urban growth areas and in the county’s housingrural areas.
