Smith/Hannegan Roundabout Update: Traffic Revisions

Drivers near the E. Smith Road and Hannegan Road Intersection Improvement Project will see traffic revisions at the intersection starting Thursday, June 20. The contractor will reduce the lanes by shifting the through lanes on Hannegan and eliminating all turn pocket lanes. New pavement markings will guide motorists through the intersection. This lane reduction will provide additional space for the contractor to complete critical concrete work for each leg of the roundabout. These revisions will be in effect until the intersection is fully closed.

Alongside the traffic revisions, expect to see traffic control managing the entire intersection between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Flaggers will be on-site to direct traffic as necessary. Please follow their directions, drive slowly, and provide all workers with space. Delays can be as long as 30 minutes during peak traffic times. Please use alternate routes whenever possible to avoid extended waits.

The speed limit in this area has been reduced to 40 miles per hour for the project's duration, even during off-work hours. This is an important safety measure. As construction work continues, the roadway may have grooved pavement, bumps, and other factors requiring a speed reduction. Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies may be present to assist with enforcement.

The project continues to make good progress. Current construction activities include importing fill material, grading the footprint of the new roundabout, grading the footprint of the stormwater pond, installing stormwater infrastructure, and connecting the new water lines to the existing lines. To complete the roundabout, a 25-day full intersection closure is required. This closure will begin after the 4th of July and end before the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden in August. These dates will be available soon.
