Whatcom County started construction on the Academy Road Stormwater Improvements Project in mid-July and completed it in October 2024. Whatcom County and the City of Bellingham jointly developed this project to improve stormwater water quality from the Academy subbasin entering Lake Whatcom. The original stormwater management system constructed in 2015 was modified to improve phosphorus removal. Now that modifications are completed, the facility will be transferred to the City of Bellingham for future operation and maintenance.
