Hannegan & E. Smith Roundabout Project Starts May 28

Whatcom County Public Works will begin intersection improvements at E. Smith Road and Hannegan Road on May 28. The project includes installing a multi-lane roundabout to enhance multimodal safety and improve traffic flow through the intersection.

Associated utility relocation work has already begun at the intersection. Project construction will start May 28, and travelers will see heavy equipment and single-lane closures through early July. The intersection will undergo a 25-day full closure in early July with a posted detour. This closure will start after the 4th of July and end before the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden.

Project Benefits:

  • Improved traffic flow through the intersection.
  • Improved multimodal safety by reducing conflict points between various roadway users.
  • Installation of curb-separated pedestrian and bicyclist facilities.
  • Improved water quality from the addition of stormwater treatment and detention.

Estimated Timeline:

  • May 2024: Weekday utility relocation work around the project site
  • May 28-Early July: Construction work. The intersection is open for travel, but delays are expected due to single-lane closures.
  • Early July-Early August: The intersection is closed for 25 consecutive calendar days between July 8 and August 7. A detour will be posted. The specific closure dates will be available soon.
