Don’t let bacteria spoil your summer fun! Fecal coliforms like E. coli and other harmful bacteria can sometimes be found in our lakes, rivers, and bays, especially after heavy rains or in areas with poor water circulation. When large numbers of these bacteria are in the water, they can infect open wounds or make you very sick, causing symptoms like stomach cramps and diarrhea.
Before you head to your favorite swimming spot, here are some important tips:
- Don't Drink the Water: Never drink water from lakes, rivers, or streams. Bring fresh water from home for yourself and your pets, preferably in a reusable bottle.
- Avoid Swimming with Cuts or Abrasions: Stay out of the water if you have any open cuts or abrasions. Bacteria can enter your body through these openings.
- Wash Your Hands: After swimming in lakes or rivers, always wash your hands before eating to prevent accidental contamination.
- Bag and Dispose of Dog Poop Properly: Help keep our waters clean by bagging your dog's poop and disposing of it in a trash can. This prevents harmful bacteria from entering our lakes and rivers.
Let's keep our waters safe and enjoy the summer responsibly!
