Smith/Hannegan Roundabout Update: Plan for Delays & Weekend Work

Construction on the E. Smith Road and Hannegan Road Intersection Improvement Project began last week. The project features a multi-lane roundabout designed to reduce congestion and provide a safer route for all users. Drivers should anticipate delays in this area between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Current construction activities include importing fill material, grading for the footprint of the new roundabout, and relocating water lines.

Heavy rains and wind on Monday caused work to slow down at the project site. To make up for the weather delay, the contractor plans to work this Saturday, June 8. Please use alternate routes to avoid extended wait times.

This week, expect to see traffic control workers managing the entire intersection. Flaggers will be on-site to direct traffic as necessary. Please follow their directions, drive slowly, and provide all workers with space. Again, please expect delays during work hours and use alternate routes.

The speed limit in this area has been reduced to 40 miles per hour for the project's duration, even during off-work hours. This is an important safety measure. As construction work continues, the roadway may have narrow and/or shifted lanes, grooved pavement, bumps, and other factors requiring a speed reduction. Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies may be present to assist with enforcement.

The project will require a full intersection closure for 25 calendar days. This closure will begin after the 4th of July and end before the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden in August. The full closure dates will be available soon.
