Whatcom County started construction on the Silver Beach Creek Stormwater Improvements Project (Phase 2) in August 2024 and completed it in October 2024. The stabilization of the banks of Silver Beach Creek south of Hillsdale Rd. is expected to decrease phosphorus loading into Lake Whatcom. This effort also enhances fish habitat by creating a more natural stream course with woody debris and natural substrate. The impoundment, which previously obstructed fish passage and was destroyed in 2021, was removed entirely. Additionally, the redesigned channel will accommodate the stormwater that flows into the low-lying area at the base of Hillsdale Rd.
The Silver Beach Creek channel south of Hillsdale Road was restored and stabilized in October.
