The Whatcom County Council is seeking applications to fill vacancies on the newly reconstituted Whatcom County Ferry Advisory Committee (formerly the Lummi Island Ferry Advisory Committee). The committee’s purpose is to provide review and recommendations to the County Council and Executive on issues that affect the ongoing operations and infrastructure of ferry service to Lummi Island. The committee also provides a forum for those who depend upon the Lummi Island ferry service to voice their ideas and concerns.
There are six vacancies on the committee.
Vacancies for individuals who live or own property on Lummi Island:
- 1 position with a partial term ending 1/31/2024
- 2 positions with partial terms ending 1/31/2025
Vacancies for individuals who do not live or own property on Lummi Island AND who live in unincorporated Whatcom County:
- 2 positions with a full term ending 1/31/2026 (priority will be given to a member of Lummi Nation)
Vacancies for individuals who reside anywhere in Whatcom County:
- 1 position with a partial term ending 1/31/2025
All applicants must live and be registered to vote in Whatcom County. Applications can be mailed, emailed, delivered to the Council Office, or submitted online at the County website. The application deadline is 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2023. Council is anticipated to make appointments during its evening meeting on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
The ferry advisory committee plays an important role in sustaining the effective operation of ferry service to Lummi Island. Committee members consider proposed changes to ferry rates and services, analyze revenue and expenditures, and compile feedback and suggestions from ferry riders in order to find new, cost-effective ways to improve ferry services.
