Sunset Avenue Landslide Repairs

Summary

Sunset Avenue experienced roadway failure from a landslide during the November 2021 flood event in Whatcom County. The affected portion of the roadway is located approximately 650 feet east of the intersection with Pacific Hwy. For safety, this portion of the roadway is currently closed to all traffic. The project will include the following components:

  • Stabilize the roadway embankment slope.
  • Reconstruct the roadway.
  • Install stormwater infrastructure, as required.
  • Relocate various utilities, if impacted by the project.

(6-5-23) Sunset Ave Landslide Repairs – Alternatives Analysis

Whatcom County Public Works has executed a preliminary design contract with our consultant, GeoEngineers. We are in the process of completing an alternatives analysis to determine the preferred slope stabilization to be designed and constructed in order to reconstruct the roadway. We expect the alternatives analysis to be completed in Summer 2023.

In the weeks and months ahead, you may see Public Works staff and consultants on-site gathering information about the project location that will assist in the alternatives being considered for design.

If you have any questions, please contact Andrew Tischleder, Project Engineer, by email at [email protected] or by phone at 360-778-6224.
